Introduction
The Quadrat d'Or, the Golden Square, is the name given to the stretch of the Eixample between Passeig de Sant Joan and Carrer d'Aribau, running from Plaça de Catalunya up to Carrer de Còrsega. Inside those few blocks stand more than a hundred and fifty protected modernista buildings. There is no denser concentration of the style anywhere in the world, and Carrer de Còrsega marks its upper edge.
Why is it called the Golden Square?
When the Eixample was built out at the end of the nineteenth century, Barcelona's industrial families competed to commission the most ambitious house on the best plot. Architects were hired the way collectors hire artists. The result was a concentrated burst of invention over about thirty years, and the name stuck because this is where the money, the talent and the ambition all landed at once.
Which buildings should you actually stop for?
Casa Batlló and Casa Milà by Gaudí are the famous two, both on Passeig de Gràcia. Casa Amatller by Puig i Cadafalch and Casa Lleó Morera by Domènech i Montaner stand beside Casa Batlló on the block known as the Illa de la Discòrdia. Further up, Palau del Baró de Quadras and Casa Comalat are quieter and, for many architects, more interesting.
What does living inside it feel like?
Less reverent than you would expect. The buildings are homes, offices and shops, not a museum quarter. You walk past a Gaudí on the way to buy bread. The Cerdà grid keeps the streets wide and the light generous, the chamfered corners open up the junctions, and the scale stays human even at this density. It is one of the few historic districts in Europe that still works as an ordinary place to live.
Còrsega Residences sits at the top edge of the Quadrat d'Or. Request the dossier, or book a private visit.
